The Realm Ethereal began as an idea that came to me as a result of pursuing digital drawing on my then relatively new iPad Pro. I say relatively new because I had the iPad for about a year or so before I really started using it to make art. I have always been a “pen and ink on paper” kind of artist. This stems from the fact that my first interests in creating art has to do with being a comic book fan first.
I have worked for years honing my drawing skills primarily as a comic book artist. I’ve never done any work for either of the Big Two. But I have had a few small collaborations through the years with smaller, self-published creators. Mostly, I’ve worked on my own creations and stories, much to the delight of mostly myself and a few, dedicated fans. I know what it’s like to totally self-publish and self-create (as in a totally one-man-show) my own comic books. It’s never truly been important to me to be able to say that I work professionally as an artist. It’s simply been the fact that I create my art and share it online with anyone who is interested in what I have to offer.
What I have to offer right now is mostly this odd collection of fantasy-inspired, kinda sorta comic-booky type characters. They’re something to do with mysterious realms and worlds, gods and goddesses, aliens and mysteriously powered, powerful human-looking beings. On the one hand, from the outside, it probably looks like a jumbly-mess of buffed dudes and semi-nude looking characters. Both male and female, mind you. I have an appreciation for both the male and female human figure and drawing and painting both as perfectly as I can capture in my mind’s eye. In reviewing the paintings I’ve created over the last few months, I now see these recent digital artworks as my gateway back into creating comic book art.
If these series of paintings have taught me anything over the past few months as I’ve been working on them (aside from the fact that working digitally has made me seemingly draw and paint faster these days), it’s that I still have a thing for wanting to make comic book art and stories. Or, that I yearn to somehow create a narrative to go along with these characters. Somewhere, there is a story of all these fantastic characters and their worlds.
I still really like painting on my iPad Pro and I’m going to continue to paint new characters and worlds based on The Realm Ethereal. And I will still be creating and printing the fine art prints based on these paintings. But…BUT…somewhere along the line, there’s a story that’s going to be told about this world I’m building. I can’t really help myself.
For now, the world-building continues. More fantastic characters, mysterious worlds, ethereal creatures and more are to come. As I see it, the rest of this year, 2018, is going to be devoted to fleshing out this world visually. All the while, I’ll be making note of what ideas, feelings and emotions I conjure up in the process.
And, come 2019, well…all I can say is I’m extremely excited for what the future holds. 2019 is going to be a big year. Let me repeat that: 2019 IS GOING TO BE A BIG YEAR. And I’ll just leave it at that for now.
